FreeCAD gives you parametric, open-source CAD without a license fee, but the learning curve is real. Under-constrained sketches can behave unpredictably, edits early in a long feature history can cause naming problems, and moving between workbenches takes time to learn. Existing FreeCAD users may prefer to keep that investment. Someone trying to print a simple part this weekend has easier options.
The plan and workflow limits differ. Onshape requires public projects on its free hobbyist plan, Fusion Personal narrows commercial and advanced use, and simpler tools trade depth for a smaller feature set. Check those boundaries before moving a long-lived project.
CAD workflows split across six tools
Use Onshape’s free hobbyist plan for browser-based parametric CAD when public project files are acceptable. Autodesk Fusion 360 Personal keeps projects private and adds desktop CAD and CAM, but its license limits revenue, active documents, and some advanced features. For simple 3D-printing parts built from primitive shapes, Tinkercad removes the sketch-and-feature workflow entirely. OpenSCAD describes geometry in code rather than an interactive sketch. SolveSpace is a narrower open-source parametric desktop option for constrained parts and small assemblies.
If the work is limited to 2D floor plans, technical drawings, or schematics, start with LibreCAD rather than a 3D modeler.
Cloud CAD and direct modeling cover different gaps
FreeCAD is a natural starting point for open-source parametric CAD. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and FreeCAD 1.0 addressed several long-standing workflow problems. Other tools remain useful for browser collaboration, direct modeling, scripted geometry, or 2D drafting.
The interface and workflow are unfamiliar even to engineers coming from commercial CAD. Workbenches (Part Design, Sketcher, Draft, Arch, etc.) act as separate tools that share a document, and switching between them takes more work than in Fusion 360 or Onshape. The default views, mouse navigation, and shortcuts feel different from every other CAD tool, which raises the cost of switching teams or working on a borrowed machine.
FreeCAD 1.0 reduced the Topological Naming Problem, where editing an early feature can break references in later features, but did not eliminate it. Anyone moving from commercial CAD should expect some models to need repaired references after upstream edits.
Assembly and collaboration differ from browser-based tools. FreeCAD does not include native cloud sync, hosted version history, or real-time co-editing, so a team needs separate file storage and version control.

- Some advanced FeatureScript and PCB integration features are paid-only.
Onshape fits hobbyists, students, open-source hardware projects, and Chromebook users who accept public documents and a non-commercial license.
Browser CAD with version history: Onshape combines parametric modeling, assemblies, browser access, and version history on the free hobbyist plan. The public-document rule excludes private client work, gifts, competition entries, and unreleased product ideas.
2. Autodesk Fusion 360 (Personal Use license): best free desktop CAD with private projects
Autodesk Fusion 360 (Personal Use license) is a commercial parametric CAD/CAM/CAE platform from Autodesk with a free Personal Use license for hobbyists and home-based makers. Runs as a desktop application on Windows and Mac with cloud sync.
Free Personal Use plan includes:

Fusion 360 Personal fits eligible hobbyists who want CAD and CAM in one tool for personal CNC, 3D-printing, or laser-cutting projects. Its license terms, active-document cap, and restricted features still apply.
CAD and CAM in one plan: Fusion combines CAD, CAM, basic simulation, and rendering in one free personal-use plan. Its built-in CAM workflow removes a separate export-and-import step for milling projects. The active-document limit is the main drawback; more than ten projects require regular activation changes.
Autodesk can change Personal-plan features and eligibility. Keep exchange-format exports of important projects so a later plan change does not leave the only usable copy in one vendor format.
3. Tinkercad: best for simple models built from primitive shapes
Tinkercad is a browser-based Autodesk tool that builds models by adding, subtracting, and grouping primitive shapes. It suits classroom work and simple printable parts.
Free plan includes:

Tinkercad fits replacement parts, simple enclosures, name plates, brackets, jigs, classroom work, and objects that can be expressed as a stack of primitive shapes.
Tinkercad works well for a bracket, drawer pull, replacement knob, or enclosure built from basic solids and holes. Move to a parametric tool when changing one dimension should update dependent geometry, because Tinkercad does not provide that feature-history workflow.
4. SolveSpace: best lightweight free open-source parametric CAD
SolveSpace is a free, open-source parametric 2D and 3D CAD tool focused on constrained mechanical parts and assemblies. Its feature set is deliberately narrower than FreeCAD’s workbench system.
Free plan includes:

A focused offline CAD tool: SolveSpace is a focused open-source parametric CAD tool with a small installer, offline use, and no personal-use license restriction. It gives up FreeCAD’s range of workbenches and Fusion or Onshape’s cloud collaboration. Choose it for constrained mechanical parts when that narrower scope is an advantage.
5. OpenSCAD: best free CAD for users who would rather code than sketch
OpenSCAD is a free, open-source 3D modeler where geometry is described in a text-based scripting language rather than drawn interactively. Compiles your script into a 3D model.
Free plan includes:
- Full programmatic 3D modeling: every dimension is a variable
- Boolean operations (union, difference, intersection)
- Imports DXF, SVG, and STL; exports STL, OFF, AMF, and 3MF
- Cross-platform: Windows, macOS, Linux

LibreCAD is a free, open-source 2D CAD application focused entirely on drafting: floor plans, mechanical drawings, schematics, technical illustration. The 2D-only counterpart to FreeCAD.
Free plan includes:

- DXF support and limited DWG interoperability

What it does not do:

How to choose the right free CAD tool
Most of the time the decision is not “which is best” but “which one matches the constraints of my project.” A few practical filters cut the list quickly.
Project privacy. Onshape’s free plan requires public documents. Choose another tool for a gift, client project, competition entry, or any design that must stay private.
Commercial use. Fusion 360’s Personal license caps revenue. Onshape’s free plan does not allow commercial use. Tinkercad’s terms allow personal commercial use of designs you create. SolveSpace, OpenSCAD, LibreCAD, and FreeCAD use GPL or LGPL licenses without a commercial-use restriction. An unrestricted license avoids a later migration if the project begins earning money.
Offline use. Onshape and Tinkercad require an internet connection. Fusion is cloud-tethered for collaboration features. SolveSpace, OpenSCAD, LibreCAD, and FreeCAD run offline.
Part complexity. Tinkercad fits a simple printable object built from primitive shapes. Mechanical parts with constraints, fillets, and assemblies point to Onshape, Fusion, SolveSpace, or FreeCAD. OpenSCAD fits one scripted design produced in many sizes.
Vendor policy risk. Fusion 360 Personal has been narrowed multiple times over the past five years. FreeCAD, SolveSpace, OpenSCAD, and LibreCAD do not depend on a commercial vendor continuing the same free license terms.
Common mistakes when switching from FreeCAD
Treating Tinkercad like a parametric tool. Tinkercad’s grouping is destructive: once you group a hole into a solid, you cannot easily edit the hole’s depth without ungrouping and rebuilding upstream changes. If you need to iterate dimensions, use a parametric tool from the start.
Using Onshape for proprietary work. It is easy to forget the documents-are-public rule when the editor looks identical to paid CAD. Anything you do not want to share publicly belongs in Fusion 360 Personal, FreeCAD, or SolveSpace, not Onshape Free.
Crossing the Fusion 360 active-document threshold and losing time to reactivation. Once you have more than ten projects in your Autodesk cloud, you will spend small chunks of time activating and deactivating files instead of designing. Plan to archive completed projects as STEP files outside the cloud, or accept that more than ten in-flight projects means it is time to evaluate Onshape or FreeCAD.
Choosing OpenSCAD for a one-off bracket. OpenSCAD is brilliant for parametric variants and version-controlled designs. It is a slow, frustrating tool for “just draw a bracket once and print it.” Match the tool to the workflow.
Expecting a 1:1 file format round-trip. STEP files transfer geometry between these tools, but feature history almost never survives the trip. If you start a part in Fusion and later move it to FreeCAD, expect to rebuild the feature tree. Pick the tool in which you can finish the project.
Switching from FreeCAD to a browser-based CAD
FreeCAD and Onshape share concepts such as sketches, constraints, features, parts, and assemblies. Their interfaces and file models differ, but that common vocabulary helps when rebuilding a project.
A practical migration order: open an existing FreeCAD project, export each part as STEP, import the STEP into Onshape, and then rebuild the feature tree by referencing the FreeCAD model as a visual guide. Do not try to import the FreeCAD file directly: Onshape does not read FCStd, and even if it did, the feature history would not transfer cleanly. Treat the migration as a rebuild informed by the original geometry, not a conversion.
For users moving from Fusion 360 to FreeCAD, often because of license uncertainty, the same principle applies: STEP preserves geometry, but the feature tree needs a manual rebuild. Estimate the work from a representative project before moving the rest of the library. Once rebuilt in FreeCAD, the design no longer depends on the Fusion 360 project format.
When FreeCAD remains the better choice
FreeCAD remains the right answer when you already know its workbench system or need several engineering modules under one LGPL license. It covers parametric modeling, technical drawings, sheet metal, architecture, FEA, CAM, and rendering in one application. A project that depends on Assembly4, A2plus, the Path workbench, or the FEM workbench has no direct free replacement in this list.
For users in those situations, the right move is usually to keep using FreeCAD and supplement it with a faster tool for one-off tasks: Tinkercad for quick prints, LibreCAD for 2D-only jobs, OpenSCAD for parametric variants. Mixing tools is normal in CAD work.
Public cloud CAD, private desktop CAD, or open source
Start with Onshape’s free hobbyist plan if public projects are acceptable, or Fusion 360 Personal if the files must stay private and its current personal-use license fits. Export important work as STEP files periodically so a later license or tool change does not trap the project.
For users who have specifically chosen open-source for licensing or principle reasons, SolveSpace is a lighter alternative to FreeCAD that handles small mechanical parts cleanly, OpenSCAD is the only code-driven parametric tool here, and LibreCAD is the right tool for 2D-only drafting. None of these replace FreeCAD’s full breadth, but each is a better choice for the tasks they cover.
